Negli anni 2004-2006 è stato attuato nella Repubblica di San Marino un progetto di riproduzione sperimentale dei gioielli del “tesoro di Domagnano”, con la sponsorizzazione del Rotary Club San Marino e della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio della Repubblica di San Marino – S.U.M.S. Le ricostruzioni sono state eseguite dall’orafo e archeologo sperimentale Marco Casagrande utilizzando tecniche compatibili con gli strumenti e le disponibilità antiche, secondo le metodiche dell’archeologia sperimentale.

I crogiuoli di fusione sono stati costruiti con minerali rinvenuti nelle colline emiliane ed anche l’argilla di Domagnano, con l’aggiunta di degrassanti, è risultata idonea alla fusione dell’oro. Le lime sono state progressivamente abbandonate lasciando il posto all’uso di pietre abrasive di varie qualità e grana. Vegetali sono stati usati per la lucidatura dell’oro ed aculei di istrice come strumenti per costruire anelli e castoni. Trapani ed altri utensili sono stati realizzati con legno di diverse essenze.
Nelle fasi di attuazione del progetto, prezioso è stato il contributo dei musei proprietari che non solo hanno autorizzato la riproduzione sperimentale, ma hanno reso disponibili pubblicazioni scientifiche e fotografie, permettendo anche l’esame diretto dei reperti.
Dopo essere stato esposto al Palazzo dell’Europa a Strasburgo (Un tesoro goto nella Repubblica di San Marino, Palazzo dell’Europa, 16-21 aprile 2007) in una mostra temporanea al Museo di Stato (Il tesoro goto di Domagnano. La riproduzione archeologica, 24 novembre 2007-2 giugno 2008), la ricostruzione sperimentale è oggi esposta al Museo di Stato, nella seconda sala della Sezione di Archeologia del Territorio.

The “Domagnano treasure” experimental reconstruction project
In the period 2004-2006, the Republic of San Marino implemented a project of experimental reproduction of the jewels of the “Domagnano treasure” , with the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of San Marino and the San Marino Foundation Cassa di Risparmio of the Republic of San Marino – SUMS. The reproductions were realized by the goldsmith and experimental archaeologist Marco Casagrande, applying manufacturing techniques consistent with the ancient instruments and resources on the basis of experimental archaeology methodology.

The melting crucibles were constructed with minerals found in the hills of Emilia and the clay of Domagnano which proved to be fit for gold casting after the addition of degreasing agents. File usage was gradually replaced by abrasive stones of various nature and texture. Plants were used for polishing gold, while porcupine quills were used as tools for the creation of rings and gemstone settings . Drills and other tools were made with various types of wood.
During the different stages of project implementation, the contribution of the museums that own the other jewels of the treasure was precious. They not only gave their permission for the experimental reproductions but also made available scientific publications and photographs allowing direct examination of the findings.
After being exhibited at the Palace of Europe in Strasbourg (A Gothic treasure in the Republic of San Marino, 16 – 21 april 2007) and in a temporary exhibition at the State Museum (The Domagnano Gothic treasure. The archaeological reproduction, 24 november 2007 – 2 june 2008), the experimental reconstruction is now exhibited at the Stete Museum, in the second room of the section of “Archaeology of the Territory”.
